What Do I Need To Know About Bridges?

If you lose more than one tooth, your remaining teeth may shift position, which puts them at risk for tooth loss as well. Also, when you lose enough teeth, it can become difficult to eat or speak properly. Luckily, bridges can act as replacements for your natural teeth.

How Do Bridges Work?

Bridges can bridge the gap between your teeth. They are really useful when you have missing teeth all on one side or opposite each other. Bridges can be cemented into your mouth permanently, or the bridge can be hooked into your existing teeth each day. Bridges consist of artificial or prosthetic teeth on an acrylic base. Bridges also have metal ends that cement or hook into your teeth or implants. By putting a bridge in between your existing teeth or implants, our dentists can make the remaining teeth more stable and prevent them from shifting.

Are There Different Types of Bridges?

There are four types of bridges. With a traditional bridge, your prosthetic teeth, base, and metal ends can be cemented or hooked alongside your existing teeth. Traditional bridges can be used to replace nearly any tooth you are missing. Maryland bridges use a metal framework behind the teeth to support the bridge, so it looks very natural. These bridges can be used on teeth toward the front of your mouth. Cantilever bridges are usually used when you need to replace a tooth next to an artificial tooth that has already been replaced. You can also choose to have an implanted bridge, which consists of prosthetic teeth sitting on titanium screws implanted in your jaw.

How Can I Make the Decision About Which Bridge Is Right for Me?

Bridges are a specialized type of dental device, and you will want to make a decision with the help of our dentists. Dentists will be able to help you decide on the perfect bridge based on the number of teeth you have missing and where your missing teeth are located. If you need help with your missing teeth, call our office to set up an appointment today.
